The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) offers a variety of financial assistance programs and services delivered by the Departments of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) and Education, Culture and Employment (ECE).


Department of Industry Tourism and Investment

Supports self-employed film and media arts producers in the NWT through the Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development (SEED) Film Industry Funding Contributions.
Support is offered to assist in the following areas:

  • Film Development (Up to a maximum of $5,000/year) - to assist applicants with certain costs associated with completing a small production or trailer/pitch production.
  • Marketing and Promotion (Up to a maximum of $15,000/year) - to assist applicants in marketing or promoting their pitch, product and/or services.
  • Film Sponsorship Support (Up to a maximum of $20,000/year)  - to assist qualified film and media arts businesses in supporting commercial media productions, including co-productions in the NWT.

This funding is distributed through the Support to Entrepreneurs and Economic Development (SEED) Policy. For more information on the program and how to apply download a copy of the:

Department of Education Culture and Employment

The GNWT also provides funding to qualified applicants to support the production and dissemination of film, audio and digital media works under the Northern Film and Media Arts Contributions and Support to Northern Performers funding programs.  

Additionally, the NWT Arts Council  provides recommendations annually to the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment on the distribution of financial awards for creative artistic projects in the visual, literary and performing arts in the NWT.

Telefilm Canada Feature Comedy Exchange

The Telefilm Canada Feature Comedy Exchange is a high-level cross-border project and business accelerator for established producers and their feature comedy properties. This initiative builds traction for comedy projects by offering producers and their teams access to respected creative counsel as well as financing and packaging expertise from key decision-makers and comedy experts.



Since 1995, BravoFACT (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent) has distributed millions of dollars in awards to Canadians for the production of short form scripted projects. Many of the resulting works have been honoured with awards around the world. 



In September 2013, Bravo introduced BravoFACTUAL awards to be granted by the BravoFACT(Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent) jury for the production of short form documentary projects. Selected projects will be eligible to apply for up to a maximum $50,000 in production funding.


CBC Absolutely Canadian Program

The purpose of the program is to support the creation of non-news, regional/local programming that is entertaining and innovative.


Canada Council for the Arts

The Canada Council for the Arts provides research, creation, production and dissemination support to artists, organizations, groups and independent collectives in film, video, new media and audio, as well as providing support for festivals, travel, operating activities and equipment acquisition.


Canadian Media Fund
The Canada Media Fund is a not-for-profit corporation that supports content creation for television and other digital platforms. The mandate of the Canada Media Fund (CMF) is to champion the creation of successful, innovative Canadian content and software applications for current and emerging digital platforms through financial support and industry research.


Independent Production Fund

The Independent Production Fund was created to provide financial support for dramatic television series created by Canadian independent producers for Canadian private broadcasters.


National Film Board

The National Film Board (NFB) of Canada is the nation's public producer and distributor of distinctive and audacious audiovisual content.  The NFB provides artists and storytellers with an opportunity to develop new forms of artistic, imaginative and socially relevant media.


Canada Arts Council - Grants to Film and Video Artists
The Grants to Film and Video Artists program supports Canadian professional independent artists who use cinema and video as a mode of artistic expression, and provides them with opportunities for creative renewal and for production of independent film and video works.


Canadian International Development Agency
The Development Information Program provides support to Canadian applicants working in the print, broadcast and electronic media and other communications vehicles. Communications initiatives and activities must be targeted to Canadian audiences to qualify. International organizations must be part of a Canadian-led consortium or partnership to apply.


Rogers Documentary Fund

The Rogers Documentary fund is devoted to creating Canadian documentary and dramatic TV programming depticting Canadian experiences.  They can Fund up to $50,000.


Rogers Telefund

The Rogers Telefund provides interim financing to Canadian producers to encourage the production of high quality indigenous television and feature film projects.


Rogers Cable Network Fund

The Rogers Cable Network Fund supports the production of first-play cable network programming for the ever-expanding television platform.


Bell Fund

The Bell Fund was established to encourage the development and production of Canadian content for digital media and television platforms.


Canadian Audiovisual Certification Office (CAVCO): Film and Video Tax Credit

The objective of the CPTC is to encourage Canadian programming and to develop an active domestic production sector. This fully refundable credit can be up to 12% of the total cost, net of assistance, of an eligible production.


Shaw Rocket Fund

The Shaw Rocket Fund will invest in and champion quality Canadian children’s programming with financing that supports the growth of the production industry.


Hot Docs CrossCurrents Doc Fund

The CrossCurrents Doc Fund is an international production fund that fosters storytelling from within communities whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented or marginalized.


Corus-Hot Docs Funds

Over the years, the Funds have supported stories and filmmakers from every corner of Canada, bringing diverse perspectives to the screen - proudly supporting outstanding Canadian documentaries and talent.


Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund

The Canadian Independent Film & Video Fund (CIFVF) is a dynamic private sector funding body which supports non-theatrical film, videos and new media projects created by Canadian independent producers to enable lifelong learning.
